Give'm the Finger Friday Surf & Culture Report

Friday, November 16, 2007

You know, sometimes you can just look at a group of normal kids and instantly tell which one is going to become a candidate for the Lost Boys.  This particular fellow looks amazingly like the Coach at that age.  A coincidence or something more…?

Hazy to cloudy skies this morning with around 3.5 miles visibility.  Winds are pretty heavy offshore by 9.7kts and the sea surface is slightly tacking.  The air temp is 61.0°f and the water is 62.1°f.  High tide is at 12:16pm +4.7’ and low tide will be at 8:36pm +0.5’.  The surf is a healthy 3’ to 4’ with some almost head high outsides.

Here’s the Platform Harvest readout and it’s showing an almost perfect west swell.  If you’re into bending those long rights and getting a couple of snaps out of the lefts then the next couple of days is going to be for you.

Since we’re going wild on the graphical representation here’s the OWHF model.  It’s telling us that the swell should last through the weekend and beyond.  This is one of those days where you might be tempted to call in sick and go surfing.  Hell they’re YOUR sick days.  You get to decide what’s sick and what isn’t.  And it was lookin’ pretty sick out there today.  See you in the morning…

Mind Boggling Monday Surf & Culture Report

December 18, 2006

Have you ever come to work one week where on Monday the President of the organization announced his resignation, then on Tuesday your boss said he had gotten a job in Florida and would be gone January 10.  On Wednesday everybody just talked about the resignations and nothing got done, then on Thursday your colleague of 32 years announced that she’d be retiring in May.  Okay – Thank God it’s Friday – but not to be undone your closest ally in the department whispers that he will be flying to Chicago for a job interview next week.  So now it’s Monday and we’re afraid to leave the office…  We should ‘a gone surfing!

A spectacular morning here in the South Bay.  Visibility is unlimited and there’s not even any smog to speak of.  The wind is offshore by 1.9kts and the sea surface is glassy.  The air temperature is 55.0°f (it feels a lot colder than that – our outside thermometer said 47.5°f, but this is from the county on the buoy) and the water is 60.6°f.  High tide is at 7:01am +6.0’ and low tide will be at 2:26pm -0.5’.  The surf is a finely shaped 3’ to 5’ and looking quite good.  If you have a choice – pick the surf and go to work later.

Speaking of going to work – the traffic was great this morning!  There must be a lot of kids who already don’t have school.  It’s amazing what havoc all those college students cause on their way to class. Here’s the OWHF model and it’s bumping right along for the rest of the week.  No rain in sight for the next week and people are starting to take off for the remainder of their “Use it or lose it” vacation time.  Here’s hoping you had a bunch!

Good morning! Let’s get right into the surf report and understand what’s happening in the world!

__________________________

Under hazy skies with no for-real clouds we have about 3 miles visibility. The wind is offshore by 2.9kts and the sea surface is glassy. The air temperature is a nippy 53.3?f and the water is an equally chilly 57.3?f. High tide is at 9:13am +6.8’ and low tide will be at 4:13pm -1.6’. Because of that high tide push the waves are struggling to be 1’ to 2’. Maybe the lowering tide will bring some inspiration to the table and start some wave action.

__________________________

It’s a far cry from yesterday when the waves were solid shoulder high with some outsides moving some serious water. Okay, it wasn’t that serious – but you had to pay attention. On Saturday Lethal Keithal made one of his semi-monthly appearances and managed to get himself inserted into some nice little lefts. Now if we could just teach him how to kick out they might have happier endings. Danger Boy made the scene on both days and emerged after both sessions unbloodied. That is unless you count the scab that fell off of his lip from getting clocked in the kisser last week. That bled a little – but he sucked it up. The usual suspects showed up on Sunday along with Tyrone James who had a couple of really spectacular backside rides that deposited him on the sand. He’s off early this morning to catch the Pancho Villa Special to Durango. Lots of sand there too.

Like who are the Einsteins who rolled the concrete trash can down the stairway at Knob Hill? There were pieces all over the place including broken bottles and all kinds of trash. Evidently the guy inside thought that he could make it all the way to the bottom before the capsule came apart. Sorry Evel – they don’t cast those things like they used to. No word on the guy on the top who was running backwards log-roller style.

The following are all things folks have done to try and get a job. To our credit we have only done three…

? Wore a tuxedo.

? Used a celebrity official fan site as one of their portfolio accomplishments.

? Brought a baby gift to the interviewer who was pregnant.

? Sat next to the hiring manager in a church pew.

? Left Yankee tickets for the interviewer.

? Sent a nude photo of himself to the hiring manager.

? Tried to do a stand-up comedy routine.

? Waited for the hiring manager at his car.

? Came dressed as a cat.

? Said they "smiled on command."

Wheels of Fire Wednesday Surf & Culture Report
December 6, 2006

Some great fog last night!  Maybe about 50 to a 100 feet in the air, in a thin layer that refracted, defracted and reflected all of the lights.  Kind of eerie in a Pennsylvania sort of way.

Left over haze this morning running in and out of the low spots.  3 miles visibility with the moon setting in the west as the sun comes bobbing up directly opposite.  The wind is offshore by 1.9kts and the sea surface is smooth and lightly whisked.  The air temperature is 54.3°f and the water is 62.1°f.  High tide is at 9:05am +6.7’ and low tide will be at 4:36pm -1.2’.  The surf is basically the same as it has been for the past week – flat
Now will you look at this!  They had to change the entire graph coordinates to accommodate the swell height.  This means that it should be big – really big – BUT – and you can see that’s a big but – but the swell has to hit us at the proper angle to make things work
You can see the Platform Harvest readout is showing a 310° swell direction – which is a bit too high for us.  The good news is that the swell is moving south and there’s not much doubt that we will get some action.  On the other hand the weather forecast for Saturday and Sunday indicate that there’s a 30% chance of precipitation and mostly cloudy conditions.  We couldn’t see any indication of prevailing winds although the Santana’s are due to stop and the normal westerlies will probably kick back in.  Whatever happens it should be fun watching it unfold.  We’re guessing the swell will hit Friday morning – so check it out on your way to work.  Saturday could be crazy or just “interesting.”___________________
Yippy-Ti-Yi-Yay…  Here’s an idea that will send you back to the days of yesteryear…

Mission Statement

The Autry National Center explores the experiences and perceptions of the diverse peoples of the American West, connecting the past with the present to inform our shared future.

What is the Autry National Center?

The Autry National Center is an intercultural history center formed from the merger of three important museums: the Southwest Museum of the American Indian, the Museum of the American West (formerly the Autry Museum of Western Heritage), and the Women of the West Museum. The Autry National Center presents a wide variety of programs and events throughout the year for our visitors and members on diverse arts and cultures of the American West.  We chose the word Center—as opposed to Museum—for the overarching name of our institution because while we are about museums, we are also about a larger world of ideas and programs. The Autry National Center explores the distinct stories of cultures and peoples, examining how the interaction of these cultures and peoples affects the complex, evolving history of the American West. The Southwest Museum of the American Indian, the Museum of the American West, and the Institute for the Study of the American West are the three public entities that enable the Autry National Center to use different lenses, curatorial specialization, and distinctive lines of intellectual inquiry to delve into the multifaceted study of the American West.  They also have a great museum store that features, Apparel and Textiles, Books Children, For Teachers, Gift Items, Jewelry Mesoamerican Art, Music CDs and Videos, Musical Instruments, Native American Art Stationery.  Not far away in the Griffith Park sagebrush – we spent the rest of the afternoon looking for Injuns…

Eight Track Tuesday Surf & Culture Report
December 5, 2006
Well, we may be going to hell in a  bucket, but at least we’re enjoying the ride.  Let’s take a look at the surf and maybe give you a peek at the first sign of the incoming swell!
The satellite photo this morning showed about three or four small clouds out in the ocean and clear skies from Fresno to Ensenada and Point Conception to Hoover Dam.  The winds are offshore by 9.7kts and if yesterday is any indication, they stayed that way all day long.  The sea surface is glassy/flat with a few marks from the wind skipping across the surface.  The air temperature is 61.2°f and the water is 61.0°f.  High tide is at 8:24am +7.0’ and low tide will be at 3:50pm -1.4’.  The surf is for all intents and purposes (or porpoises) flat.  Even thought the buoy claims it’s 2.3’ – it’s not enough to make things happen.
But the good news starts Thursday afternoon with the swell making a dramatic arrival at SF and then running down the coast.  We should begin to see signs on Friday and Saturday should have some good waves.  We’re checking on the weather associated with the swell.  Since we got Easky’s message, we’ve heard rumors of rain and wind.  We’ll know more as we get closer to the weekend so stay tuned._____________________
Okay – so all you folks with kids will appreciate this gift idea.
The Kidspace Children’s Museum is in Pasadena on 480 Arroyo Blvd. (626-449-9144  or www.kidspacemuseumstore.com)  We’re thinking it would be a good idea to take the munchkins to a place where they can actually touch the exhibits and climb around in all sorts of creative environments.  One of the climbing areas mimics the wisteria that winds through the gallery spaces.  Puts a little more adventure into the museum experience.  Other than that you can cruise around Pasadena and maybe grab some food at one of the shmancy restaurants that seem to be on every corner.  A fun day not too far away!______________________
Speaking of not too far away – Hermosa Beach is having their Holiday Stroll on Thursday, December 7th.  The mayor will be there lighting the 25’ tall Christmas tree in the Plaza and officially opening the Holiday Season Hermosa style.  We’re thinking of riding our bikes down around 7pm and strolling around the shops looking for handouts.  Picture of the Plaza
Okay – now picture this with snow…

Everything Is Fried Friday Surf & Culture Report
October 20, 2006

A beautiful blue sky this morning with a fringe of brown smog around the bottom edge.  20+ miles visibility and if it weren’t for that smogginess you’d be seeing clear to the Inn of the Seventh Ray.  The wind is swirling but primarily out of the north by 2.1kts.  The sea surface is extra glassy.  The air temp is 64.2°f and the water is 63.5°f.  High tide will be at 8:50am +5.5’ and low tide will follow at 3:13pm +0.6’.  The surf is a smallish 1’ to 2’ with the buoy pretending to be 2.6’.  Is there good news?...

If there’s good news, they’re whispering it.  Looks to be a slight bump on Saturday morning – but it will all depend on who leaves the swell window open.  The safe answer will be that it might be 2’ – you could go out on a limb and imagine there might be some 3 footers – but that limb might break and you’d be doing the Wiley Coyote mid-air run.  They have told us it will be sunny – we mean “they” in terms of Heidegger’s “das man.”   All lower case…

“…We’ll be on the road for the next couple of weeks so there will be some serious lapses in the Surf & Culture Report.  We will be traveling throughout the northeast scouting locations for next year’s calendar shoot.  We’ve scheduled some side trips to scope out the right coast countryside. First to Salem, to check out the witch angle and then out to Provincetown to get down with the GLB& T folks at the end of the eastern world.  We’ve heard that you can check out the surf at a cranberry bog and that there might be waves off of Plymouth Rock.  We don’t know – we’ll find out.  Then we’ll be heading south to NY,NY for some cultcha.  Yeah, we’ll be catching a couple of performances, the fave being the Cleftomaniacs,(featuring none other than Gidget herself!) and All Hallow’s Eve  in Washington Square.  We were advised to not miss the spectacle in the Square.  So we’re taking costumes – YES – the Professor tells us that he will be once again be channeling one of the guys from the Marina Car Wash.  LoLa says if Homeland Security doesn’t let the pith helmet through she’s kicking the shit out of the Professor.  He remains warned.  We’ll try and write when we telecommunications allow…  We’ll be back on the 2nd of November.

Theocentric Thursday Surf & Culture Report
October 19, 2006
Because we were indisposed yesterday (the brakes on the X-Terrible went south) this quote hit us especially hard:  “For starters, be on time.  It’s polite and it shows your respect for others.  Of course, it’s easy for me to say.  It’s easy for me to be punctual when armed men stop all the traffic in town for ya.”  Yep, President Bush said that – so let’s get right to the surf…
Clear skies and 15 miles visibility.  The wind is off out of the NE by 5.6kts and the sea surface is nice and glassy.  The air temp is 64.9°f and the water is unusually cooler than the air at 63.1°f.  High tide is at 8:33am +5.3’ and low tide will follow at 2:43pm +0.9’.  The surf is in the 2’ to 3’ range off a 2.6’ buoy reading and looking fun but a bit high in the tide.
We always like checking out some of the different wave and tidal models that they have out there.  Most of them are experimental enough to always warn you that none of this is possible to bank on – but it’s fun anyway!  If we’re reading this right it’s flat in Burbank, Palmdale and Bakersfield.  We’ll advise you if anything changes._________________________
Since we felt like we had had enough bad brakes for one day, we called up Lethal Keithal and asked him if he wanted to hit the surf.  So he picked us up at the Intergalactic Z-World shop and we detoured into Joe’s and drained the coffee before  heading down to Knob for a bit of a session.  So we’re sitting out there – The Professor on the Hellboy Kingfish and Lethal Keithal on the Goodyear Blimpfinity and suddenly we find ourselves in the middle of a pod of dolphin.  One of the dolphins pushes up under a seaweed patty and wears it like a dreadlock toupee and kinda looks around.  So we laugh and then the next dolphin comes along and does the SAME thing!  It’s like the first guy came by and said to the crowd “Hey, how do I look with hair?”  and then the second guy said, “Like this – just like Bob Marley!”  At least that’s what we think  they said.

Time Warp Tuesday Surf & Culture Report

A virtually cloudless morning here in the So. Bay except for a couple of large emanations from the Edison Company.  10miles visibility and the winds are currently calm.  The sea surface still has a major bump from the wind last night and it looks pretty scuffed.  The air temperature is 61.2°f and the water is 63.3°f, still pretty nice for this time of year.  High tide is at 7:58am +4.8’ and low tide will be at 1:42pm +1.8’.  The surf is looking pretty good at 3’ to 4’ with some larger outsides.  Too bad it’s not a little glassier, but the size is making up for a lot of the bump issues.

Moray Monday Surf & Culture Report
October 16, 2006

We’ve started putting some of our old Lost Boy Surf & Culture Reports on our blog site at .  So if you want to take a look back at a 20/20 view of the LBS&CR feel free to drop in.  You can even leave comments and communicate with the editor.  He probably won’t communicate back – but it’s a nice feature.

A pretty heavy overcast / cloud cover this morning, but we still have around 15 miles visibility and can see the outlines of Santa Monica across the bay.  At 6am the winds were out of SSW by 3.9kts and the sea surface had a significant ruffle to it.  The air temperature was 60.8°f and the water is an even 64.0°.  High tide is at 7:38am +4.6’ and low tide will be at 1:05pm +2.3’.  The surf is a close to the beach 2’ to 4’ and with the wind it’s not looking too great.
The OWHF is suggesting things might build up a bit over the next day and then take a bit of a drop going into the weekend.  There’s some weather out in the north Pacific and part of the tail of the storm has swept over the northern corner of Hawaii.  Speaking of Hawaii, they were doing a bit of shaking on the Big Island:  HONOLULU - Officials began inspecting bridges and roads across Hawaii early Monday following the strongest earthquake to rattle the islands in more than two decades, a 6.6-magnitude quake that caused blackouts and landslides but no reported fatalities.  At least one stretch of road leading to a bridge near the earthquake’s epicenter on the Big Island collapsed, Civil Defense Agency spokesman Dave Curtis said Monday.  Several other roads on the Big Island were closed by mudslides, debris and boulders, but most were still passable, he said. The power were back on across most of the islands Monday morning. About a dozen schools were closed for inspection, but no major injuries or deaths had been reported.
“You could almost see the cars bouncing up and down in the parking garage,” Piper said.  The earthquake was followed by several strong aftershocks on Sunday, including one measuring a magnitude of 5.8, the USGS said.  With all of that volcanic activity, it’s not any wonder that they have so many earthquakes of significant magnitude – we can report that the holdings of the Lost Boys on the Big Island all survived unscathed.

On Saturday night we got a chance to see Sully’s photographs of his trek on the Camino de Santiago Compostella.   He took some great shots – most of them postcard quality.  We don’t know if it was Sully or the countryside or what – but his photos did look remarkably like the Irish countryside.  Even the ones without him in them!  Of course the narration made the whole thing priceless – so you really need to get in touch with him and check out the pics and get the bottom line on hiking in Spain – where the rain doesn’t necessarily (as we learned) stay in the plain…

Woody Wednesday Surf & Culture Report
October 11, 2006
Good morning to all of our woodsmen and lumberjacks out there in the big world.  There’s always a lot of brush and timber to clear.  So before you get started, take a look at the surf and then know you’re not missing anything!
Yeah well, it’s clear and visibility is about 3 miles due to a persistent marine haze / almost fog.  Winds are currently calm and the sea surface is very glassy.  The air is a chilly 60.8°f and the water is 63.5°f.  Further inland it’s even colder with most temps below the 60° mark.  Low tide is at 5:42am +2.7’ and high tide will be at 12:17pm +5.8’.  The surf is right around 6” – that’s inches – don’t make any mistake about that.  The best thing about that is that it’s hard to imagine it can get any smaller. Then of course we have the OWHF which seems to indicate that things might start to get better.  We’re just not sure we’re crazy about how it seems to peak and then just kinda hangs there?  What is that about?  Why doesn’t it just keep going up for a while?  Whatever – we’ll take another look on Friday and guess what might be in store for the weekend.________________________
Body Language Primer:  Keeping you From Misspeaking Yourself…
(We’ve also noted this works in the line-up)
Don't:  Rub the back of your head or neck. Even if you really do just have a cramp in your neck, these gestures make you look disinterested.  (This also sets you up for someone taking off in front of you.  On the other hand it’s okay to rub the back of someone else’s neck.)  Rub or touch your nose. This suggests that you're not being completely honest, and it's gross.  (The only thing worse is if your nose starts to grow.  Then you just have to leave – immediately.  Sit with your armed folded across your chest. You'll appear unfriendly and disengaged.  (And sometimes – especially if it’s cold – it’s hard to unfold them in time to catch the wave.)  Cross your legs and idly shake one over the other. It's distracting and shows how uncomfortable you are.  (This is a good trick when you’re on your board – but it usually evidences itself as spinning in tight little circles when you’re doing that egg-beater thing with your feet.)  Lean your body towards the door. You'll appear ready to make a mad dash for the door.  (We don’t have a problem with this – we’re almost never shown the door – we know where it is.)  Slouch back in your seat. This will make you appear disinterested and unprepared.  (But very cool and suave…)  Stare back blankly. This is a look people naturally adapt when they are trying to distance themselves.  (We suggest staring with your good eye and letting your bad eye wander.  This establishes presence, but a keen awareness of your surroundings.  Miloe and the Professor have become good at this.)

Do:
Sit up straight, and lean slightly forward in your chair (Board.) In addition to projecting interest and engagement in the interaction, aligning your body's position to that of the other person shows admiration and agreement.  (It also might suggest slavish fawning.)   Show your enthusiasm by keeping an interested expression. Nod and make positive gestures in moderation to avoid looking like a bobblehead.  (Or DO look like a bobblehead and keep time in your head to the tune of your choice – try Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice.”)  Establish a comfortable amount of personal space between you and the other person. Invading personal space (anything more than 20 inches) could make the other person feel uncomfortable and take the focus away from your conversation.  (Whip out your measuring tape and nail that 20” – or use anything handy that’s roughly 20” long.)  Limit your application of colognes and perfumes. Invading aromas can arouse allergies. Being an individual that gives someone a headache isn't going to do anything in your favor.  (But they are better than body odor! Wink, wink)  If you are speaking to more than one person at once, make sure you briefly address both people with your gaze (without looking like a tennis spectator) and return your attention to the person who has asked you a question.  (Or pick a spot somewhere in between them and force them by sheer force of will to gravitate toward that spot.)  Interruptions can happen. If they do, refrain from staring at the person while they address their immediate business and motion your willingness to leave if they need privacy.  (Yes – it is awkward when the other guy is pissing in his wetsuit – but join in!  It can create a “moment.”)  Stand up and smile. Standing increases your level of alertness and allows you to become more engaged in the conversation.  (It’s also the real way to ride the wave.  When you’re erect you get noticed.  Smiling shows you’re confident and just plain having fun.)
